Scotch Stitches are great stitches for architecture and borders. 
They are made up of a diagonal stitch over one canvas thread, over two, over three, over two and over one. These stitches all slant towards the upper right of the canvas. They make a small square in the canvas when complete. 

Scotch Stitches work well for any area on a canvas that is three canvas threads by three canvas threads.
