Introducing an exclusive Artist Collaboration!
We're excited to share a fun new summer project that you're sure to love today on the blog! Two of our favorite artists- SCT Designs and Stitch Style Needlepoint- have teamed up to bring you a brand new artist collaboration only available at KC Needlepoint.

Last summer, Sara and Jinny decided they wanted to do an artist collaboration together. The pair started brainstorming ideas for a project! Their goal was to some up with something summery and unique that you'd truly want to have in your home. Here was the catch: They also wanted to make sure it was completely self finishing, so that any stitcher could get through the project from start to finish entirely on their own.  Sara is the queen of self finishing items, so it's no surprise she was undaunted by the challenge!

They settled on the idea of a self finishing napkin holder and rattan tray. A fun addition to any patio, coffee table or bar cart! Palm fronds immediately came to mind. Paired with stripes, they'd make a fun, elegant summer project. They wanted to come up with something that you'd want to display in your home year round.

Jinny wanted to make sure the project was approachable for all levels of stitcher, so Sara and Jinny immediately got to work. Below you'll find an easy to follow stitch guide for the project along with self finishing instructions!

Stitch Guide:

Border:

Stitch the border of the canvas in Horizontal Giant Double Brick Stitch using 1 strand of Pepper Pot Silk in a corresponding color.

Wavy Line:

Stitch the waved line outlining the border in Tent Stitch using 1 strand of Straw Silk in a corresponding color.

Vertical Stripes:

Stitch the vertical stripes in alternating rows of Satin Stitch, slanting the stitch inwards and outwards towards the long horizontal edge it is closest to.

Three thick horizontal stripes:

Stitch the three thick horizontal in Satin Stitch using 1 strand of Pepper Pot Silk in a corresponding color. Slant the stitches from lower right to upper left.

Two thick horizontal stripes: (Between three stripes above)

Stitch the two thick horizontal in Satin Stitch using 1 strand of Pepper Pot Silk in a corresponding color. Slant the stitches from lower left to upper right.

Palm Leaves:

Stitch the mid line and stem on each palm in Tent Stitch using 1 strand of Straw Silk in a corresponding color.

Stitch the remainder of the leaf in Long and Short Stitches using 1 strand of Straw Silk. This is a place where you will get to use your artistic creativity! Using your needle and tread, angle the stitches so that they fan outward towards the edge of the segment of leaf you are stitching on. Refer to the photo below for more information.

Finishing Instructions:

Step 1:
Use the remaining thread from the outside border of the canvas to add a binding stitch to the four edges of your canvas. You can find our Binding Stitch Tutorial online here.

Step 2:
Cut a piece of cardboard the same size as your design.

Step 3:
Cut the four corners off of your canvas and fold the canvas around the cardboard.

Step 4:
Use a hot glue gun to glue the selvage (white edge on the canvas) to the back of the cardboard.

Step 5:
Pop your canvas in your tray/napkin holder and place your lucite on top of the canvas (if you're stitching the larger piece).

Step 6:
Place your finished tray/napkin holder somewhere in your home you can enjoy!
