Background stitches we use again and again
Background stitches are one of the trickiest areas to pick a stitch for. Perhaps it’s because on so many canvases you have big open areas of color that can be filled with almost anything! Today we’re sharing two background stitches that we use time and time again. We know that you will too!

Nobuko Stitch
Nobuko Stitch is a tricky one! But once you get the hang of it, you’ll use it over and over. While it is made up of diagonal stitches, it is worked in horizontal rows. (We think this is what trips people up!) Try Nobuko Stitch for skies, water and anywhere you want to add a little movement to your canvas.
(It's also a great stitch for animal fur!)

Double Brick Stitch
Double Brick Stitch is another great background stitch. It’s a very even and balanced stitch and won’t overpower the rest of your canvas. (That’s one of the reasons we love it so much!)

Work this stitch in horizontal rows. Each of your stitches will span over two canvas threads (or over one hole in the canvas).

This stitch is really a two for one, because while you can work it so the stitches are vertical, you can also rotate the stitch 90 degrees and work the stitches horizontally too!
